Receipt Reader
When you take pictures of your receipts, they will be processed by the ExpensePoint OCR Receipt Reader. This technology helps by automatically extracting key details from your receipt, which can then be used to auto-populate your expense reports, saving you time and effort.
The Optical Character Recognition (OCR) converts various types of documents, such as receipts or PDF files, captured by a digital camera, into editable and searchable data.
Using the OCR Receipt Reader
Typically, it takes about 2 to 10 minutes for the Receipt Reader to read the data from a receipt. The goal is that by the time you travel or commute from the restaurant or vendor to your destination, your receipt will be read.
You can take a picture with multiple Receipts in one image. The Receipt Reader will process each receipt in the background.
Even if the Receipt Reader is still processing a receipt, you can proceed to add it to your expense report without waiting for the processing to complete first.
The OCR Receipt Reader reads and extracts the following key details from your receipts:
-
Vendor name
-
Date of purchase
-
Total amount
-
Taxes
You can view these details on the Receipt Details screen.

Sometimes, the Receipt Reader may have difficulty accurately reading a receipt due to issues like poor lighting or image quality. In such cases, you may see error messages such as:
-
Receipt reader failed (e.g TOO DARK)
If this happens, you may need to retake the picture with better lighting or clarity.
